Field Trips & Workshops

Proposal for Field Trips & After-School Workshops

1) Experiments
Experiments are performed within the flight chamber to determine the terminal velocities of various sports balls and to examine flight patterns of non-uniform items.

2) Lecture
We provide a brief lecture on physics and physical science topics relevant to the operation of the vertical wind tunnel and body flight and appropriate for the science level of your students.

3) Tour
Our tour of the facility takes the students inside the tunnel itself for an up close look at the science and engineering involved in its operation.

4) Flight
The program concludes with an opportunity for students to fly (or more accurately, fall at terminal velocity.)

San Jose Tech After-School Programs at The Tech Museum

The Tech Museum enhances students' after-school experience by allowing them to explore a science topic in an interactive, hands-on setting.

Students can explore over 100 hands-on exhibits, interact with our gallery programs, wonder at our IMAX educational movies, and/or get an in-depth, instructor-led lab experience.

Most labs utilize Design Challenge Learning, an exciting, fun process that enables students to engage in an open-ended design process that results in an original solution.

This fall, the museum will be open extended hours on Fridays until 9:00 p.m.

Labs Timing: October to February, Fridays only
Choose from 4 45-minute labs

Cost: only $125 per lab. Labs hold up to 32 students.
Labs will start at 3:30 p.m.

The San Jose TECH Museum of Innovation: Mind Over Machine 90 minutes. $225 (Partial GATE funds possible)

Students design their own roller coasters to learn how engineers prototype and build machines. They also explore kinetic and potential energy, friction and Newton's 1st and 2nd Laws of Motion

LHS: Squid The Inside Story 50 minutes. $14.00

Students discover unique structures and adaptations as they examine and dissect fresh squid. They identify the parts of the digestive and respiratory systems and see the difference between male and female squid. Using the natural "pen" found inside the squid, students try writing with ink from its ink sac.
Topics: Internal and External Anatomy, Adaptations.

LHS: Amazing Brain 50 minutes. $14.00

Students examine real brains from animals such as birds, reptiles, small mammals, and even a human. They learn which brain parts are responsible for processing sensory information, enabling thought, and controlling bodily functions. The students observe sensory behavior of live animals and design experiments to test which sense an animal relies on most. All brain specimens are preserved and nontoxic. Respect for animals is emphasized.

Topics: Brain Anatomy and Function, Senses, Experiment Design

LHS: Who Done It? 50 minutes. $14.00

Who killed Clyde? With help from him, our overstuffed victim, your aspiring detectives analyze evidence found at the scene of a mock crime. Using chromatography, pH tests, flame tests, and deductive reasoning, the students sleuth out the suspect!
Topics: Chemical Testing, Forensic Science

LHS: Microscopic Journeys  50 minutes. $14.00

Students use microscopes to peer into the amazing structures of a variety of both living and nonliving things, learning about the instrument's parts and usage. Looking closely at organisms, plant tissue, and other specimens introduces students to parts and structures that make up the microscopic and macroscopic world. Life Science, Workshop .
Topics: Microscopy, Cells

LHS: Colors From Space 50 minutes. $11.00

"What's your favorite color?" gets more intriguing when students use our planetarium to explore the spectrum of both visible and invisible light. They see a mysterious cloth change color by the light of different "suns," use filters to alter colors and reveal fine detail in planets and nebulae, and find out things that color can tell us about the stars and planets. Planetarium, Workshop .
Topics: Properties of Light: Absorption, Reflection, Color, Spectra; Filters

Chabot Space & Science  Planet Trek plus Planetarium: 2 1/4 hours. $12.

Using planetarium software and other engaging media we’ll learn how to identify planets in the current night sky and learn how our Solar System, and other solar systems, form. Through hands-on activities we’ll model the scale sizes of our planets and dwarf planets. We’ll investigate impact craters on earth and elsewhere in the Solar System and experiment with the variables that affect crater size. And we’ll perform simulations of radar mapping on Venus. Using scientific inquiry skills and hands-on activities, students identify planets in the night sky, model the planets to scale, and explore planet processes and landforms. Students simulate radar mapping of Venus’ surface, travel to Mars with NASA missions, record and study Jupiter’s moons, “discover” new planets, and examine the possibilities of life beyond earth.

NASA Ames Exploration Encounter 2 1/2 hours. FREE (March Conference Week 1:00-3:30)

The NASA Ames Exploration Encounter (AEE) is a unique educational program designed to inspire positive attitudes about science, technology, engineering and math for all students in the 4th through 6th grade.

Located in a renovated 6'x6' supersonic wind tunnel building at NASA Ames in Mountain View, California; the Ames Exploration Encounter makes math and science curriculum come alive. Students experience science in action and come to realize its connection to their lives.

Hiller Aviation Museum  Astronaut Adventure : $40
Thursday, November 11th
SPECIAL TIME: 12 PM-3 PM
Explore the science of space travel and use Newton's Third Law to launch an air-powered rocket. Build and fly a space shuttle glider and take the controls of a simulated Shuttle Training Aircraft in a mission to the final frontier.

Hiller Aviation Museum Wright Flight  $40
Saturday, November 6th. Time: 1:30-4:30
Follow in the footsteps of Wilbur and Orville Wright in a re-creation of the journey to Kitty Hawk. Build and fly a realistic Wright Brothers glider, investigate two different Wright airplanes, and launch the original 1903 Flyer in the Flight Sim Zone.

Hiller Aviation Museum Introduction to Aviation Grades 3-6, 90-Minute Duration
Program Fee $8.50 per student
Combine the best of two programs and explore aviation from every angle! Students conduct a hands-on inspection of a real airplane, build a flying model glider and try their hand flying a small airplane in the Flight Sim Zone. It’s an all-inclusive aviation experience!

Factory Tour Cohn-Stone Glass Gallery  FREE. By appointment only. Richmond.

Visit and learn about the industries that make our state great. Cohn-Stone Studios is the work place of artists Michael Cohn and Molly Stone. They produce Hand Blown Art Glass which is exhibited and collected worldwide. Both functional and sculptural works are created, all individually unique. Vases, bowls, paperweights, and sculptural works of art are produced by the studio.

Zeum: SF Children's Museum Clay Animation Field Trip 2 hours. $200 Flat Fee (Greenbrook GATE Funds)

Students learn the basics of stop-motion animation in this project-based workshop. Groups design their own clay characters and then produce a short animated film using multimedia tools.

Before and during the visit, students engage in each step of the process, from developing a story concept, to sculpting clay characters, to filming a stop motion animation movie.

The clay animation workshop develops literacy and math skills through storytelling and sequencing, and emphasizes creativity, communication, patience and cooperation.
The animation activity can be adapted to almost any classroom curriculum and provides an engaging learning platform to explore a wide array of topics. For example, students can animate a scene from a play or novel, represent a scene from history, or illustrate a scientific discovery.

Students take away: clay figures and a clay animation movie on DVD .

Sarah Science  After School Workshops. 1 hour.  (partial GATE funds possible)

"Our programs feature hands-on projects built by each child to engage and delight them while making it easy to understand even complex science concepts. Sarah makes the projects fun and dances the science around them. "
Greenbrook offered two of these workshops last year and the students and parents raved abut them!
